My Leadership Definition

Leadership to me means having the ability to inspire, guide and support peers towards a shared goal while also creating an environment where everyone feels heard and valued. A leader is someone who can communicate clearly, be an active listener, and leads by example with integrity. Leadership also means being flexible and adaptable, taking responsibility for all outcomes, and always seeking growth for the group. Leadership is important to create positive impacts and allow others to reach their full potential. One of my core values that strongly influences the way I practice leadership is collaboration. Collaboration allows me to create inclusive spaces where everyone can input ideas and thoughts which allow for diverse perspectives and value amongst a team. Another core value that influences my leadership skills is accountability. Although I like to be an empathetic leader, holding myself and others accountable for our commitments will help a group to maintain high standards and grow to full potential. I believe that there should always be a strong balance between enjoyment while also fulfilling necessary tasks.

Competency 1: Group Dynamics

Why did you choose this competency?

I chose this competency because it was the only one from the Interpersonal/Team test that I was still developing in. This proves to me that this is an area where I still have lots of room to grow and learn. 

What practical skills or knowledge do you hope to gain by further developing this competency? 

By developing my group dynamic skills, I hope that I can create greater cultural and emotional awareness. In doing so I hope to become more skilled at reading a group’s energy and be able to collaborate more cohesively with people who share different perspectives. 

How will you work on developing this competency?

I will work on this competency by engaging myself in new groups around campus that I might not be familiar with yet to learn about new group dynamics and how the group is. 

Competency 2: Self-Management

Why did you choose this competency?

I chose this competency because it was one, I scored a developing score on. I personally know that I always tend to take a heavy load of classes, extracurriculars, and more in my life. This is something that I have been trying to work on since high school but could always use more help with. 

How will you work on developing this competency?

I will work on this competency by learning how to not always lead and take control but allow others to assist me, so my load does not become too much. I think the recommended course-PSYC 365- could also be especially useful and interesting so maybe try to add that to my schedule in an upcoming semester.

What practical skills or knowledge do you hope to gain by further developing this competency? 

I hope to learn more stress management from this competency as I will hopefully be able to learn to say no more. I also think adaptability is a skill I want to improve on because sometimes I am so Type-A that I become overwhelmed when things are not how I envision them to be. 

Competency 3: Openness

Why did you choose this competency?

I chose this competency because it was one, I scored a developing level on. Also, I find that I have great interpersonal skills and love to converse with others but sometimes I stay very surface level in conversations which can make it difficult to get to know me. 

How will you work on developing this competency?

I will work on this competency during leadership labs trying to really let people get to know me throughout the day. I also think I can apply this to my other clubs and even people I meet in classes.

What practical skills or knowledge do you hope to gain by further developing this competency? 

Being able to be more open will allow me to have better communication skills. I will be able to express to others my needs within a group setting. Being more open will also allow me to make deeper connections which would benefit both parties in a situation.

Competency 4: Empathy

Why did you choose this competency?

I chose this competency because it was one, I scored a developing score on. I thought I was a pretty empathetic person, but I know there is always room for growth with empathy and making sure others are cared for. 

How will you work on developing this competency?

I will try to work on developing my empathy first amongst my friends. Making sure I am fully there for them and listening to their concerns and problems. Then hopefully I will be able to implement these skills to other people like acquaintances in clubs or other organizations. 

What practical skills or knowledge do you hope to gain by further developing this competency? 

One skill I hope to develop my working on empathy is my compassion and understanding. Being able to understand my teammates and where their struggles might be beneficial to maintain positive energy within a group. Also, being more compassionate will allow me to feel more connected with my group rather than just being compassionate about the tasks.
